The agency, which is part of the Department of Justice of the United States (DoJ), made the announcement on Monday, February 3, indicating the opening of registration for bidders who will participate in the auction scheduled for Tuesday, February 18 from 8:00 AM EST until 2:00 pm ITS T.
However, registrations will close on February 12. The notification states that:
«The auction will take place over a period of six hours on February 18. Offers will be accepted by email from previously registered bidders only ».
According to the announcement, the agency is preparing to auction 4,040,54069820 BTC for a value of 37.4 million at the time of publication according to the data from the Coin360 cryptographic data aggregator.
Registered bidders must deposit $ 200,000 to be considered for the auction, an amount that will be fully refunded in the event that they do not win any of the auction blocks or earn BTC with a value less than the deposit amount.
The USMS plans to conduct the auction in phases or series. A table provided within the notification shows that there will be a total of four series divided to contain different amounts of BTC.
- The first Series A will have five blocks, each of 500 BTC with a total of 2,500 BTC.
- Series B will consist of 10 blocks each with 100 BTC for a total of 1,000 BTC
- While the third Series C will have 10 blocks each with 50 BTC.
- The last Series D will have the rest of the coins worth 40.54069820 that will be put up for auction in a single block.
There are four requirements to participate in the next auction:
- A manually signed PDF copy of the Bidder Registration Form
- A copy of a photo ID issued by the government to the Bidder (or the Bidder's Control Person (s))
- Deposit in US dollars sent by electronic funds transfer (EFT) originating from a bank located in the United States
- A copy of the EFT transmission receipt
"You are not eligible to submit an offer or otherwise participate in this auction unless you have submitted all required documents and have received confirmation from the USMS that you are an eligible bidder," the USMS said.
This is the first auction of digital currency in more than a year by a US agency. UU., And the last one was made in November 2018 when the same agency sold 660 BTC coins.
In that year alone, the USMS sold more than 50 million dollars worth of coins. According to Monday's notification, the USMS notes that the coins that will be auctioned on the 18th were currencies of other administrative departments obtained mainly from seizures and legal cases.
