A PhD in molecular genetics consolidates as an artist and explains the biological world through digital works of art

For the first time, an Argentine artist -and Doctor in Molecular Genetics- presents a digital art exhibition that seeks to express the imperceptible world that inhabits the biological universe of which we are all a part and that will awaken the viewer’s senses. An unprecedented experience that will bring the public closer to the world of science through art.
Drawing on technological tools and artificial intelligence, the scientifically-based Doctor and contemporary artist, Ariel Wilner invites you to immerse yourself in the hidden beauty of molecules to invite you to reflect on the mysterious organic world of which there are almost no graphic representations. In this way, the creator uses art as a vehicle for scientific dissemination, inquiring into different problems that afflict human beings.
The works of Ariel Wilner can be seen in the Neotenia exhibition that will open on March 30 at 4:00 p.m. at 7 p.m. and that can then be visited from March 31 to April 2 and from April 6 to 9 at Munar Arte, Av. Don Pedro de Mendoza 155 5, from 12 noon. to 7:00 p.m., space that is part of the artistic circuit of La Boca, headed by Fundación Proa.

“Science talks a lot about what it knows, but it doesn’t talk about what it doesn’t know. That’s what I’m excited to explore, what’s missing. For example, science cannot explain how words or imagination actually come out of our brain, it knows what mechanisms occur, but not how it happens. In this sense, my work seeks to move because from the power of the image I also try to provide content to seek to question ourselves on different topics of interest to the world”, explains Ariel Wilner.
SCIENCE BECOMES ART
At 62 years old and with a science-based career, Ariel Wilner found in contemporary art a way to creatively express her concerns about the molecular world that surrounds us. Through access to different technological tools, he was able to find in the digital world a creative way to capture visual universes to explain, imagine and bring people closer to that microscopic world that cannot be directly observed but with which we all live .
This search led him to generate different pieces and in 2020 he created “The Challenge of Life”, a work that seeks to raise awareness about a key problem: hunger in the world. This series had the endorsement of the NGO Support Precision Agriculture and the Nobel Prize in Medicine, Richard Roberts. Thus, Wilner finds in art an expressive format to approach science and approach large subjects in a playful and sensitive way, linking them with art. Additionally, at the end of 2022 he presented a Sci-Art exhibition in Decentraland in the Museum District space and has participated in a Poncho NFT exhibition.
Ariel Wilner trained as a Biologist with an emphasis in Evolution. He completed postgraduate studies obtaining a Master of Science in Molecular Genetics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Buenos Aires. As an artist he has exhibited his work at The Brick Lane Gallery London in 2016 and at the BIT 2020 International Science, Art and Technology Biennale.
In addition, he developed other collaborative works with emblematic personalities such as Julio Bocca and Diana Cohen Agrest, among others, with whom he interpreted problems that go through society.
ABOUT NEOTHENY
Neotenia is a multimedia contemporary art exhibition, where images of molecules created with artificial intelligence technologies are exhibited. These images explore the border between the possible, the real and science fiction, delving into imaginary landscapes of the subcellular and molecular world.
The exhibition will feature thirty multimedia works on a large LED screen (2 x 2 meters) in addition to thirty digital works printed on paper, curated by Juan Pablo Ferlat.
The pieces make up the most recent production by Ariel Wilner, created in the last six months (2022-2023) with artificial intelligence models based on artificial neural networks with the capacity to represent images from text. This algorithm takes as input a text or natural language description of the image that Ariel wants to generate and responds by producing an image that represents or matches that description.
What is Neoteny?
Neoteny is a process studied by evolutionary biology by which an adult population retains characteristics of the juvenile state. For example, the creativity that allows Scientists and Artists to explore unknown territories in search of new ideas and discoveries, can be understood as the neotenic ability to keep “the door of imagination” open as in childhood.
The Neotenia exhibition borrows this idea from biology to state that maintaining access to creativity and the extension of curiosity in adult life is of the utmost importance so that Humanity can give innovative responses to the new problems that arise from civilization. contemporary. Neoteny linked to creativity and innovation in fields such as science and art, is of great importance in the adaptation and prosperity of the species in changing environments such as those of the 21st century. From this point of view, Ariel Wilner, at 62, is an example of being neotenic.
